Grief is Love Persevering!
In 2021, Marvel Studios made available through Disney+ its first Marvel Cinematic Universe television limited series Wandavision. On the final to last episode, the two main characters of the show, Wanda and Vision, are having a discussion about death and grief. Paraphrasing, Vision tells Wanda What is grief, if not love persevering?
Three people very close to me have passed away in recent years. As human beings, we tend to ignore our mortality and behave every day as if tomorrow is a certainty. And, because of this, we are never prepared for when death arrives in one’s intimate circle. Even less, when such arrival is sudden, swift, and unexpected.
Each time, my way of dealing with these losses was to focus on others. What do other people need? How can I help? What is the point of crying since those who left would want me to take care of their loved ones.
I don’t know if this is a healthy or unhealthy approach. However, I have found myself believing that death is not the end of the story, it is just one of its chapters. And since tomorrow is not a certainty while death is (and also taxes but that is another discussion), all I can do today is celebrate the lives of Aleydita, Alejo, and Sergi.
Something is not beautiful because it lasts forever (again paraphrasing Vision but this time in Age of Ultron), it is beautiful because it touches and it teaches you. Aleydita showed me that sacrificing for your family matters, Alejo taught me that life is only worth living if you love without measure, when you choose to be vulnerable and feel, even at the risk of getting hurt, and Sergi showed me that any goal is possible if you really wanted it and that happiness is more likely achieved with people by your side, being present for others.
I thank God for giving me the opportunity to live and learn from them. I am thankful for this love persevering, always!!!!!
Para siempre, Ale, Alejo, y Sergi.
